The tenth Virgil Flowers mystery isn’t quite vintage Sandford, but Deep Freeze still entertains.
This time, the Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agent is dispatched to the small town of Trippton — a locale that featured in an earlier, unrelated novel — to investigate the murder of Gina Hemming, who was fished from a river, frozen almost completely solid, the day after a meeting of the committee to organise the 25th High School reunion.
Sandford reveals the true killer at the very beginning of the novel, so this is less about unravelling the mystery with Flowers, but observing his gradual sifting through the long list of clues and suspects to identify the murderer. It’s Sandford treading familiar territory; but just a little too pedestrian to be amongst his best.
